Sinclair II Project Reveal
A modern English Tudor home in the heart of Austin designed and built by Cedar & Oak.
In this modern Tudor home, our goal was to create a timeless dwelling that would perfectly fit on the established street. With each of our new builds, we desire to create an old world feel that balances tried and true design with modern functionality and ease. This project epitomizes this balance, with its European-inspired design elements, open-concept living spaces, emphasis on raw materials, and inclusion of handmade and vintage lighting.
One of our favorite design features in the entry hallway is the built-in nook, coated in Benjamin Moore’s “Oil Cloth.” This cozy, moody space allows for a visual break from the otherwise light and airy entryway—making it the perfect spot for a gallery wall.
On the opposing wall, we have the staircase to the second story. This curved staircase was truly a construction work of art. The smooth lines and seamless curvature add both charm and visual interest in the most understated way. This particular staircase can be seen from the entry, the living room, the dining room, and the kitchen, making it an unexpected but necessary design focal point.
The kitchen space is infused with old-world European charm. Our designer, Aspen, aimed to create a home that felt “cozy, inviting, and authentic—reminiscent of a true English Tudor home.” The custom turned island legs, the kerfed island detailing, the neutral cabinets (painted Benjamin Moore’s “Pale Oak”), the ogee arch plaster range hood, and the unlaquered brass accents were all very intentional design decisions that work together to create an approachable and inviting space.
The built-in dish rack is one of Aspen’s favorite European-inspired features in the kitchen space. Drying racks are common in English Tudor kitchens and workspaces, and incorporating a traditional dish rack into the modern cabinet design “speaks to the Tudor style and old-world charm” that Aspen hoped to create.
Features such as the marble island countertops, soapstone countertops, and unlaquered brass plumbing fixtures serve as raw materials that will continue to patina and age naturally over time—further displaying the beautiful life and communal gatherings that occur in the kitchen space.
The first floor of the home also boasts a full bath with a floating soapstone vanity, a walk-in pantry, and a mudroom connecting the garage to the main living spaces. The checkerboard floors add a playful touch, beautifully created with Gea tiles in the colors Linen and Calacatta.
The pantry leads to a hidden laundry room, which is painted Benjamin Moore’s “Oil Cloth.” “Hiding the machines behind built-in cabinetry and adding picture lights makes the laundry room feel both cozy and somehow elevated, creating the illusion that it isn’t a modern space,” Aspen notes.
The primary suite serves as an oasis for the homeowner. Tucked away into its own wing of the second story, this primary suite features large windows for abundant natural light, a walk-in closet, a freestanding tub, and a stain-grade vanity with ample room for storage. The floors are coated in a mosaic tile from Ivy Hill Tile, and the shower walls are clad in this glossy tile from Rango USA. The walls of the home are painted in Benjamin Moore’s “White Dove,” which beautifully reflects the light.
